An amalgamation (blend) of keidas (dialectally also "isthmus") and dialectal ketvel, ketvele (“narrow isthmus”), and thus the lake is named after a particular isthmus (possibly referring to a peninsula that is now called Niininiemi, or an isthmus now called Temintaipale). First attested as Keijttel in 1552.
