Meaning & usage
a Finnish surname
Where this word comes from
From kimi- + -nki, with the initial part likely of the same origin as the place name Kemi. Originally a name for some lakes, then for some villages, whence used for surnames. The -i- for an expected -e- in the first syllable has also been noted in attestations of the place name Kemi. According to Heikkilä (2014), this name derives from Sami *Këmëńžë (literally “little fairway”), with the root of this name deriving from Proto-Germanic *kwēmijaz (“easily accessible or passable”).
