Where this word comes from

From koivisto (“birch forest”). The surname is traditionally western, although it is also found in Eastern Finland, and usually derives from place names. It was also adopted during the Fennicization of surnames in the early 20th century, but only in a small number of cases did the original Swedish surname containing the word björk (“birch”). The place name (for a town now in Russia) is a kind of translation from Swedish Björkö, which literally translates to “birch island”, but even this might not be its original meaning.
