Kuusisto.
a Finnish surname
Meaning & usage
a Finnish surname
A former municipality, now part of Kaarina.
Where this word comes from
From kuusisto (“spruce forest”). The municipality is named after the island it is located on (first attested as Custu in 1295), in turn named because of its abundance of spruce trees. The surname is mostly from place names, but also adopted during the Fennicization of surnames in the early 20th century (in some, but a minority of, cases the original Swedish surname contained the word gran (“spruce”)).
