Where this word comes from

From Lappa- + -i (compare lappalainen). There are two main theories on the origin of this word: * related to lape, (dialectal) lappea (from Proto-Finnic *lappë-), originally in the meaning “remote place”. * Swedish lapp (“patch”), as a calque of the Sami endonym represented by e.g. vuowjoš (1743 hapax legomenon in the Sami variety spoken in or around Tornio, seemingly derived from the same word whence also Lule Sami vuojvve (“patch (of textile), gusset”)) The surname may originally have been used to refer to the Sámi. First attested as Latinate Lappia in c. 1200. The former municipality in Satakunta is probably named after the nearby river Lapinjoki, in turn after the Sami (perhaps referring to the river as a route for the inland Sami to access the sea).
