Meaning & usage
a town and municipality of Uusimaa, Finland
Where this word comes from
Named after the lake Lohja, which may derive from a contraction of *Lohijärvi (lohi + järvi) > *Lohjää > Lohja, or from dialectal lohja, lohjake, lohjakka (“slow, incapable; large, bulky, stiff”) through bynames/nicknames. Alternatively, it may have first referred to a waterway into which Lake Lohja flows, and might be from a contraction equivalent to lohi + oja, but through Estonian.
