a Finnish surname
Meaning & usage
a Finnish surname
Where this word comes from
In eastern Finland, possibly from a vernacular form of Russian Демешко (Demeško), Демешка (Demeška) + -nen. In western Finland, possibly from a vernacular form of some Germanic names + -nen; compare also Mäskälä, suggesting an original Meska- ~ Mäskä-; compare e.g. diminutive forms of German Matthias or German Thomas like Maschke (although this particular form does not seem old enough to be the origin of the Finnish names), or to the source of Masku.
