Alternatively, possibly derived from Proto-Finnic *muha- (“smile”) (whence muhoilla (“to smile contentedly”)), perhaps via an old given name *Muho(i) (compare Мугуй (Muguj), attested in Минька Мугуй (Minʹka Muguj) in a 1598 document, perhaps containing the Karelian form of a name *Muhoi akin to Karelian muha, muhe, muhu (“smile”)).
