Nousiainen.
a Finnish surname
Meaning & usage
a Finnish surname
a municipality of Southwest Finland
Where this word comes from
Nousi(j)a + -inen. At least the surname is most likely from the pre-Christian male name Nousia (< nousija), but the two senses are not directly connected as the surname is a Savonian -(i)nen-type surname, while the parish is located in Finland Proper. The name of the Southwest Finnish municipality could perhaps more likely derive from earlier nousijan mäki (literally “riser's/climber's hill”) (as in “hill one has to ascend to”); this would refer to the high hill on which the church was still located in the late 19th century. The place name is first attested as Nousia in 1232.
