Meaning & usage
Oulu (a municipality, the capital city of North Ostrobothnia, Finland)
Where this word comes from
The city is named after the river (Oulujoki), in turn after the lake (Oulujärvi). The name is first attested as vlu (probably in reference to the lake) in 1327. Probably from the dialectal term oulu (“floodwater”), a Sami borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Samic *oalē (“waterway”). Alternatively, the aforementioned Samic term might be borrowed from Finnish, which would rather derive from another Samic term, *võvl(V), in turn from earlier *votl- (compare to the name of the Vodla river in Russia), perhaps a Paleo-European substrate borrowing.
