Meaning & usage
a municipality of Central Ostrobothnia, Finland
a Finnish surname
Where this word comes from
In many cases from perho, as an adopted surname due to its meaning “butterfly”. However, older attestations of the name, found in both western and eastern Finland, are harder to explain. In Eastern Finland, vernacular forms of Russian Порфи́рий (Porfírij) are one possibility. The place is probably named after a body of water, which itself seems to be from an anthroponym (from Tavastia, in what counts as western Finland).
