Where this word comes from

A vernacular form of Ancient Greek Πέτρος (Pétros), seemingly via Old Swedish Pætar (/ˈpɛːtar/? attested in Runic) or Pētar. The ending may have been reshaped by influence from Latin -ārius. * (St Petersburg): Formally named after Saint Peter the Apostle, but alluding to Peter the Great, the founder of the modern city of St Petersburg. In Finnish, towns named after individuals are often left as is. Compare Mikkeli, Antrea and Loviisa.
