From pohja (“bottom, north”). The surname is from place names. The name of the place in Uusimaa refers to its location at the 'bottom' or far end of a bay. It was however likely not derived directly, and was instead 'reconstructed' based on the Swedish name Pojo, which in turn derived from some original Finnish name containing pohja.
