Where this word comes from
pyhä + maa (“land”). In this place, pyhä is probably used in an old (perhaps figurative) sense “remote, untouched”, referring to its remote location from earlier settlements. The maa (“land”) originally referred to the fact that the place was an island (although it is not one any longer due to glacial rebound). Later, the site may have contained a holy pagan site. Folklore states that the place, originally named Pahamaa (literally “evil land”), was inhabited by evil spirits, who left it screaming once a church was built there.
