Where this word comes from
Unknown. Theories have included connection with a dialectal term roine (“roar, thunder, noise”) (~ roikua?) and a comparison to Indo-European *kroyn-is (whence Proto-Germanic *hrainiz (“clean, pure”)). The surname and given name were inspired by depictions of the lake in popular literature in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as in poems by Zachris Topelius (especially Kesäpäivä Kangasalla) and Karl Collan.
