Unknown. The original nominative was Saimas as part of Saimas wesi, Saimas selkä (1646), with Saimaa being levelled from the oblique (inflected) stem Saima(h)a-. Possibly connected with the Sami endonym *sāmē. Alternatively from an unknown substrate language.
