From salmi (“strait, sound”). As a surname, developed from an earlier byname or nickname, which is attested since the 16th century. The surname only became common during the adoption (in Western Finland) and Fennicization of surnames in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The name of the town in Karelia is due to it containing a strait (between the mainland and islands belonging to the same parish).
