Satakunta.

First attested in 1331 (in Latin text as sigillis terre sathagundhae). Possibly from sata (“hundred”) + kunta, probably as an indirect calque of Old Swedish hundari; compare English hundred, referring to both the number and a kind of an administrative division. It has sometimes been proposed that the latter component kunta may derive from the same root (Proto-Germanic *hundą) as well, either only in Satakunta or as a whole (the latter is unlikely, however). Another theory, proposed by Nuutinen (1989), is that the first element sata- is a Germanic loanword meaning "landing place, shore" (Proto-Germanic *staþaz), from which also satama is derived. Heikkilä (2014) considers it most likely that the name of the region has dual origins. The region may have originally been a part of Tavastia or even part of a 'Kvenland' (Kainuu, before the term began to refer to a region further north). The etymology, as proposed by Nuutinen, would explain the original place name Satakunta referring to the shores at what was then the mouth of the Kokemäenjoki river and settlements by it. The name would then have been adopted for the wider region, perhaps only shortly before the Swedish invasions in the mid-13th century, partly also due to its reference (as understood folk-etymologically) to a military division gathered from around a hundred men.
