Meaning & usage
a Finnish surname transferred from the nickname
Where this word comes from
From suomalainen, a term that now means “Finn”, but used to mean someone from Southwest Finland or Finland Proper specifically. Regional uses might be using the nickname in other ways: in Eastern Finland (Karelia), also used as a nickname for any Finn from the Swedish side of the border (especially of those who moved into Vanha Suomi), or just any Catholic or Lutheran (as opposed to Eastern Orthodox). In the islands in the Gulf of Finland, suomalainen could have been used to refer to mainlanders. Also adopted during the Fennicization of surnames in the turn of the 20th century.
