Meaning & usage
Finland (a country in Northern Europe)
Suomi on tasavalta.
synonym of Varsinais-Suomi (“Southwest Finland”)
a Finnish surname
Where this word comes from
From Proto-Finnic *soomi, probably from earlier *sämä and cognate with Proto-Samic *sāmē (see the Proto-Finnic entry for more details and references). The name originally referred only to the area now known as Southwest Finland (Finnish Varsinais-Suomi (literally “Finland Proper”)). Cognates include Estonian Soome, Ingrian Soomi, Livonian sūomõ, Votic soomi and (borrowed) Northern Sami Suopma. According to Mikko K. Heikkilä, first attested in 811 in the Royal Frankish Annals as an anthroponym (personal name). Note however that Petri Kallio disputes that this word is an attestation of Suomi. The surname can be found already in a small number of sources in the 17th century, but only became common during the Fennicization of surnames in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
