Meaning & usage

name/ˈtornio/[ˈt̪o̞rnio̞]
  1. Tornio (a city and municipality of Lapland, Finland)

Where this word comes from

Named after the river Tornionjoki that the city is situated on, whose name is usually thought to derive from the obsolete Finnish word tornio (“war spear”). According to Jouko Vahtola, this term was first used by Tavastians, before it spread north via hunters and settlers. The term may have referred to the sharp, spear-like shape of a peninsula or a bay. The term tornio, found only in names and Agricola's texts, is likely derived from Old Swedish þorn (“thorn, spike”), probably as Old Swedish þorn + -io.
