synonym of Kalanti
Where this word comes from
uusi (“new”) + kirkko (“church”). The town in Southwest Finland was named after a parish, in turn named after a 'new' church constructed in the early 15th century. The place was originally named Kalanti, and this name was revived in 1936 in order to distinguish the municipality from the one in what was then southeastern Finland. That southeastern one, in turn, has two theories for why it was named such. The first states that it was possibly the first parish split off from Muolaa, while the second states that it refers to a 'new' church constructed in the late 15th century to replace an earlier church dedicated to Saint Bridget (of Sweden).
