Meaning & usage
a lake in Finland
A navigable waterway consisting of multiple connected lakes, the center of which is the lake of Vanajavesi (now usually called Vanajaveden reitti to distinguish it from the lake proper).
Where this word comes from
Vanaja + vesi (“lake, water”). According to linguist and onomastician Viljo Nissilä, the term originally referred to the entire waterway spanning from Janakkala to Tyrväntö, and Vanaja was derived as vana (“trail, track”) + -ja (for the suffix, see Proto-Finnic *-ja).
