Meaning & usage
Varkaus (a town and municipality of Northern Savonia, Finland)
Where this word comes from
From varkaus (“theft”). There are multiple theories for how the place got this name, but the most likely one states that it referred to a type of isthmus (portage) that a boat could be dragged on to avoid a rapid section of a river. Thus, in effect, a hard part of the journey was "stolen" by skipping it.
