Where this word comes from

From Proto-Finnic *akja (“edge”), borrowed from Proto-Germanic *agjō. The semantic shift likely occurred via a derived adjective aajaton (“boundless”) (still found in dialects), originally literally “edgeless”; after the original word was forgotten, aaja (“broad, vast”) was then derived as a back-formation. The similar-sounding laaja may also have influenced it.
