Where this word comes from

From Proto-Finnic [Term?] (compare Karelian ašnita); originally *asnaita, asnata (attested in 1787). The modern form is probably by folk etymology with ansa (“trap”) (and to avoid the hard-to-pronounce -sn-; compare känsä from earlier käsnä). The Finnic word is probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *asniz, *asunz (“reward”) (compare Gothic 𐌰𐍃𐌽𐌴𐌹𐍃 (asneis, “a hireling, day labourer”)).
