Meaning & usage

noun/ˈehtoː/[ˈe̞ht̪o̞ː]
  1. evening

elämän ehtoo (lit. "evening of the life")
Where this word comes from

From Proto-Finnic *ëktago (compare Estonian õhtu, Votic ohtogo), derived from *ektä (whence dialectal ehtä), likely related to Northern Sami ikte (“yesterday”) (possibly borrowed from Finnic). Replaced in the standard language in the 19th century with ilta, which was traditionally used in the eastern dialects (as opposed to ehtoo, which was traditionally a Western Finnish word).
