Meaning & usage

noun/ˈesikːo/[ˈe̞s̠ikːo̞]
  1. primrose (plant of the genus Primula)

Where this word comes from

From esi- (“pre-”) + -kko, possibly thus called because some primroses are among the early bloomers in the spring (probably via a reference to the taxonomic name Primula, from primus (“first”)). Equivalent to Estonian esik- (“first”). Coined by Finnish physician and philologist Elias Lönnrot in 1860 (originally as esikkö, later form esikko due to A. J. Mela in the 1880s); in dialects, meant e.g. “firstborn”.
