Where this word comes from
Probably the instructive singular of obsolete ihta (“opportunity, chance”), from Proto-Finnic *ihta, possibly from Indo-Iranian. The regular standard form would be ihdan, attested fragmentarily in Old Literary Finnish; variants of this like ihran and ihlan are also found in some dialects. The form ihan, seemingly native to eastern dialects, is however common throughout the Finnish-speaking area.
