From Proto-Finnic *jooni (“path”) (compare Estonian joon), from Proto-Finno-Permic *jëne (compare Southern Sami joene (“road”), Erzya ян (jan, “path”)), probably borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *yáHnam. Sense diversification from original “path” is particular to Finnic. Compare dialectal juntu (“path”). The narratological sense (“plot”) was first used by Finnish professor, poet and scholar August Ahlqvist in 1860.
