Meaning & usage

adj/ˈkɑːmeɑ/[ˈkɑ̝ːme̞ɑ̝]
  1. awful, terrible, shocking, ghastly

Where this word comes from

Uncertain; if the earlier form was kamea, perhaps from kamala by suffix substitution (-la > -ea). Alternatively, according to Aikio (2019), derived with -ea from *kaama-, in turn borrowed from Proto-Norse [script needed] (*kāma-) (compare Icelandic kám (“dirt, muck; smudge”), Faroese kámur (“dark, murky; dim, unclear”)). Akin to Karelian koamie.
