Semantic development * (to lower, drop, put down): Inherited from at least Proto-Finnic. *: → (to bring down, decrease): Figurative development. * (to go lower, move down, fall, drop): Inherited from at least Proto-Finnic. *: → (to come down, decrease): Figurative development. * (to let): Inherited from at least Proto-Finnic. * (to count): Probably developed from “to lower, put down”, in reference to putting things down from one's hands one at a time to count them, or alternatively from “to let”, in reference to letting animals out (e.g. to pasture) one by one to count them. The same sense is also found in the Ingrian and Karelian cognates. Later extended to calculations in general. * (to calculate): From “to count”; first attested in (anonymous author, 'insändt'): Förslag till Arithmetiska Konstord i Finskan, jemte Anmärkningar rörande dess Rättskrifning.
