Possibly loi- + -va, akin to lojua (“to lie around, sprawl”), dialectal loitia (“to lie lazily, loll”) (compare dialectal Estonian loid (“gradual, slight”), which is almost certainly related to loitia). Compare also loitto, which in dialects can also mean the same as loiva. The form loiva may have been influenced by lievä. Cognate with Karelian loiva.
