From Proto-Finnic *meci (“honey”) (compare Estonian mesi), from Proto-Finno-Ugric *mete (compare Erzya медь (meď), Udmurt му (mu), Hungarian méz), which is probably borrowed from Proto-Indo-European *médʰu (whence English mead), or more specifically from Pre-Proto-Indo-Iranian. In the sense “honey”, mostly displaced by the borrowed hunaja.
