Where this word comes from

First attested as a synonym of kaisla (since 1469); the modern sense is probably from Elias Lönnrot's Flora Fennica (1860). Origin uncertain. Perhaps borrowed from Proto-Norse *ᛒᛁᚢᛉ- (*biuʀ-), if it was a cognate of Proto-West Germanic *beusu (“rush”), but there are no North Germanic reflexes of such a word. Alternatively, could be related to etymology 2 (“beaver”), but the semantic development would not be certain.
