Where this word comes from
Probably from puljata (“to wheel and deal, swindle”), alternatively from Swedish spolväv, which is a somewhat complicated weaving technique. According to a folk etymology the word comes from the method of separating substitute alcohol from a polishing medium called pulituuri (“French polish”) by adding salt to it and then shaking it (veivata (“to crank, shake”)). The word puliukko (“drunkard”) comes from this practice, but most likely puliveivata and puliukko have separate roots.
