Where this word comes from

From Proto-Finnic *raha, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *skrahā (“squirrel skin”) (later Proto-Germanic *skrahō; compare Old Norse skrá). Originally, this word referred to animal furs (especially squirrel pelts), since they were a common payment instrument before notes and coins were introduced. Attested (in its modern sense) since the time of Mikael Agricola (output c. 1543–1552), possibly already in 1413 (as part of the name Raholankoijfuenssijlldha).
