From Proto-Finnic *rauta, borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *raudô (compare Old Norse rauði (“hematite”)) or Proto-Baltic *raudā (compare Latvian rūda (“ore”)), but in either case ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰ-o- (“red”) in reference to the reddish color of iron ores.
