Meaning & usage

adj/ˈrunsɑs/[ˈruns̠ɑ̝s̠]

  2. sizable, hefty, significant

  3. just over

    in-plural · sometimes
  4. abundant (less than the sum of all of its divisors except itself)

Where this word comes from

Unknown. Relationship to Old High German runsa (“running water, stream”) has been proposed, but this is semantically distant, especially considering Karelian runšaš (North Karelian), Livvi ruznaz (“sturdy, hefty”) and Ludian ruznaz (“sturdy, hefty”). Given that -sn- has a wider distribution, *rusnas is probably original, and a similar metathesis as with känsä (< *käsnä) took place in Finnish. First attested in 1433 (in the name Jönis Runsas, in which runsas may represent a byname/nickname).
