From Proto-Finnic *sauvu (compare Livonian so’v), possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic *śëwwe (“smoke”) (compare Northern Sami suovva and possibly Erzya сув (suv, “fog, curtain”)). * (unit of taxation): Originally defined based on the number of residential buildings with a chimney. Compare Swedish rök, Russian дым (dym), both literally meaning “smoke” but also adapted as terms for taxation.
