Meaning & usage

noun/ˈsikunɑ/[ˈs̠ikunɑ̝]
  1. A distilled alcoholic beverage containing more fusel oil than desirable, such as low quality moonshine.

Where this word comes from

Possibly borrowed from Russian, compare Russian сивуха (sivuxa, “raw vodka”), dialectal синюха (sinjuxa, “denatured alcohol”); this explanation presupposes some kind of (folk-etymological) adaptation, e.g. metathesis from синюха (sinjuxa) > sikuna. Has also been compared with Old Norse signa (“to sink (down)”) and its descendants.
