It is not known whether a short -u- or long -uu- is primary. * Possibly borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian siuntà from sių̃sti (“to send”), but note that the phonology of the Baltic word remains unclear; see Proto-Baltic *sjúnsti. * Possibly borrowed from Slavic (compare Russian суд (sud); while phonetically possible, the semantic shift is dubious, although SSA compares it to the polysemy of German richten (“to direct; to judge”)).
