Where this word comes from

From Proto-Finnic *taibal (compare Karelian taival, taipaleh, Ludian taibal, taibaleh; compare also Estonian Taebla, a place name), probably cognate with Proto-Samic *tuojpëlē (whence obsolete Skolt Sami tuibal (“area between lakes, etc.”) (*tuuibâl) and several place names like Northern Sami Duoibal), although there are some phonetic issues (the Sami word requires an earlier form *tajpela, while Finnic needs *tajpala or *tajpale). Within Finnic, has been theorized to derive from taipua (“to bend”) (~ taittaa (“to fold”)), perhaps in reference to a ridge (as a folded or bent part of terrain). First attested in 1234 as Taypale (corresponding to modern taipale).
