Uncertain, but cognate with Karelian tarmo and also related to Northern Sami dárbmu. Earlier connected with Proto-Finno-Ugric *tärmä (compare Eastern Khanty тӓрәм (tärəm), Eastern Mansi те̄рыӈ (tēryň)), but the phonological comparison is not exactly regular. Has also been compared with Old Norse þarmr (whence Swedish tarm (“intestine, gut, bowels”)), but the semantic gap makes this dubious.
