Where this word comes from

tieto (“data, information, knowledge”) + kone (“machine”). In sporadic use already in the early 20th century, but began to be applied to computers in the 1950s. It was officially proposed and accepted as a term for 'computer' on December 14, 1959, and quickly became common, although older terms like sähköaivo and elektroniaivo remained in use into the 1960s, marginally even into the 1970s. Already listed under the addenda in the sixth volume of Nykysuomen sanakirja, released in 1961, alongside the longer synonym tietojenkäsittelykone, which may also have influenced tietokone. A similarly formed word is Swedish datamaskin (now dated in place of its shortened version dator), which may have served as an inspiration (the Finnish term may even be a calque).
