Where this word comes from
Derived from vuo (“flow, stream”). Possibly equivalent to vuo + -s; the -ksi for -s (< -ks) is probably an archaism due to the suffix being attached to a monosyllabic stem. The sense "flow, rising tide" is a literary invention from the 1830s, prior to which another literary coinage had actually assigned the opposite meaning ("ebb, receding tide") to it. However, in the end, despite them originally being the other way around, vuoksi and luode came to mean "flow" and "ebb" respectively.
