Where this word comes from

From Pouyat, the family name of Jean François Pouyat, a French botanist who in 1835 carried this variety of banana from to Jamaica from Martinique, where it was known as Figue Baudin; in Jamaica, it was renamed after him and spread thence to the other Caribbean isles. His nom de famille has Occitan origins, being either from pouy (“height; hill”, related to French puy) or from pou, poui (“a well”, related to puits), or perhaps a diminutive of the given name Pou.
