Inherited from Middle French choix, from Old French chois, deverbal from choisir, coisir (“to differentiate, see distinctly”), from Frankish *keusan (see contemporary Dutch kiezen), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *keusaną (“to choose”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵews- (“to choose”).
