From Middle Irish crothaid, from Old Irish crothaid, from Proto-Celtic *krotīti, causative of *kreteti (“to approach”). Cognate with Manx craa and Scottish Gaelic crath. Probably not related to crith (“to shake, tremble”), which generally refers to unintentional shaking (for example, with cold or fear, or of an inanimate object like a tree or the earth).
