Where this word comes from
From Old Irish slíab, from Proto-Celtic *sleibos. In Lá an tSléibhe (literally “Day of the Mountain”) and Luan an tSléibhe (“judgment day, doomsday”, literally “Monday of the Mountain”) it is a reference to Mount Zion. The use in minced oaths probably derives from this.
